When I consult with small businesses to use the acronym "kiss off".  What it means is not what you think.  What "kiss off means" is keep it simple stupid or face failure.  Business strategy consulting for a small business usually requires you to take a look at their brick-and-mortar approach and what they intend to do on the web.  As pointed out previously Internet marketing of a particular product connected to a brick-and-mortar institution needs to be a well thought out strategy.
Small businesses do not have the economic resources that medium or large companies can afford.  Therefore, the strategy involved in dealing with a small business has to be uniquely different in comparison to other medium or large business strategies.  Small businesses need to be lean and mean.  This requires a new way to look at business altogether.  For example they may need to design their own website because they don't have the cash flow to higher a web company.  They may also have to learn to do many other business tasks in order to prove their market and be competitive.  That's all the bad news.  The good news is a small company can travel faster and further with lower expenditures when compared to their competition.

Being self-reliant and maximizing your impact for your marketing dollar is absolutely crucial for a small business.  A small business strategy should be focused around return on investment infrastructure and products.  With the advent of desktop publishing and/or print on demand, these technologies allow a small business to look like a big business in so far as their products.  Another important key concept for a small business strategy is to embrace the fact that you want no returns or problems with your product.  Any returns or issues with your product, just takes away from the bottom line.  This doesn't mean that you don't stand behind your product or honor warranties.  Rather, you build in quality and value into the product from the very first start.

Small businesses need to educate themselves as to what Internet marketing tools or other marketing tools they can afford plus what is the payback.  Not everything will have an immediate return on one's investment, things don't usually manifest themselves so quickly in business; however, building business infrastructure that will lead to good return on one's investment is a positive move for a small business.
