I have been making websites since 1994.  I even owned a fairly large website company and got very familiar with successful webs and their components.  I also deal with people who cannot afford to have a website built, but they still required a website for their business.  I tend to try to help these people in various ways.

The first way is to assist them in getting the right software so they can build their own website.  I actually am producing a PDF for purchase that goes over of the software and helps a person understand what they need to build.  However at this time it's not quite ready.  Suffice it to say that they are is reasonably good software that is fairly easy to use that can assist you in building your website.

In addition to software support or consultation I also discuss what makes a good website and what to avoid.  There are some classic mistakes that most people use when constructing their own website.  One of the classic mistakes as they throw everything into their website.  They use flash, things that whirl around, and even scripts that track your cursor.  This is all very amateurish and distracts from the purpose of the website.  The purpose of the website is to convert visitors into clients.  At least most the time that's quite true, however there are some exceptions to that rule.  However, for the most part people are using their websites to make business and develop relationships to further their business.  To that end, a website should be clean and easy to use.  Here is a list of a few things to avoid.

·   Do not use inverse video.  Inverse video is white letters on a dark background, which is 25% harder for the human eye to read.  Why would you make your website difficult for someone to read?  It's okay to use inverse video for a headline or a way to attract an eye to some particular area; however, if you need them to read much make it easy!
·   Don't use flash on your first page.  Google doesn't read flash ends to some degree doesn't like flash so therefore don't use it early on in your site.  The only exception to this is to serve video on the web, which you might want to do through Youtube or some other service like blip.tv.
·   Use pictures with captions.  90% of the people read the captions underneath the picture.
·   Before you start your website do very good keyword searching to find your particular niche keywords.  If you fail to capture the proper keywords you will not drive any traffic to your site and therefore you have failed.
·   Always use your keywords in your ad copy and in your captions plus make sure and use them in your meta tags.
·   Always use good search engine optimization techniques, both on and off page.
·   Always dovetail your Internet presence with your brick-and-mortar presence, in an integrated marketing sense.

These are just a few of the key ideas when you are constructing your own website that you must keep in mind to be successful.  The PDF I am developing will cover these topics and many more that you need to keep in mind if you're going to construct your own website.  I hope this is been helpful to you, and remember success is no accident.

Building your own website can be done with software; which you can purchase from the web...
